How to block a WhatsApp contact without deleting

Blocking pauses outbound WhatsApp messages to a person while keeping their record. In AvenPing, open Contacts, open the row menu, and click Block. This is separate from Delete. Restore sending with Unblock.

Prerequisites

Step-by-step

  1. Open Contacts
Sign in at app.avenping.com. Click Contacts. Find the row with Search contacts....

  2. Click Block
Open the row action menu. Click Block. The contact stays in the list. Block is hidden once they are blocked; the menu then shows Unblock.

  3. Confirm you cannot send
Open the thread in Messages. The composer shows Can't send message and This contact is blocked. with an Unblock link. In contact info, the action is Block User or Unblock User.

  4. Unblock when you need to message again
On Contacts, open the row menu and click Unblock. Or click Unblock on the inbox banner, or Unblock User in the conversation. You can then use Type a message or send a template as usual. See How to send and reply to WhatsApp messages in the inbox.

TIP

Use Block to pause sending. Use Delete only when you intend to remove the contact and associated chats permanently.

FAQ

Does blocking delete chats?

No. The contact and message history remain. Delete is the action that permanently removes chats. See How to permanently delete a WhatsApp contact.

Why does the inbox say Can't send message?

The contact is blocked. Click Unblock on that banner, or Unblock User in contact info, or Unblock on the Contacts row menu.

Can I block from the inbox instead of Contacts?

Yes. In Messages, open the conversation actions and click Block User. The same conversation shows Unblock User after they are blocked.
