How to send a WhatsApp follow-up after someone messages you ​

An After they message you event sends an approved WhatsApp template after a contact writes in. In AvenPing, open Automation → Events, click Create Event, choose After they message you, set Wait this long, pick who should receive it, choose a template, then Start event.

Step-by-step ​

  1. Open Events
    Sign in at app.avenping.com. In the left sidebar, open Automation → Events. The page title is Events. Optionally filter by line. Click Create Event. The modal title is Create Event. Subtitle: Automatically send a WhatsApp template on a date, after someone messages you, or when your system asks. If you have more than one active line, set the line in the line picker.

  2. Name the event and choose After they message you
    On Trigger, fill Event name (placeholder: Birthday reminder — change it to something like Follow up after first message). Under When should this message send?, click After they message you. Helper text: after someone messages you, AvenPing waits, then sends this template. If they write again before the first send, the wait starts over.

  3. Set Wait this long and how often
    Enter the amount and Time unit: Minutes, Hours, or Days. Default is 30 Minutes. Under How often should we send it?, pick Send once (one message per contact), Repeat a few times (enter Number of sends), or Keep repeating. Click Next.

  4. Choose the audience
    On Audience, under Who should get this message?, pick Everyone on this number or Only matching contacts. Matching uses the same Contact filters as campaigns (status, labels, period, agent, country, attributes). Click Next.

  5. Choose Template, variables, then Start event
    On Template, pick an approved template. Click Next. If the template has placeholders, Variables appears — map each to a contact attribute or a static value (with a fallback when required). On Review, confirm When, How often, Who, and Message. Click Start event. Toast: Event activated. The table Status shows Active. When it sends shows a summary such as Wait 30 minutes after they message you.

TIP

Use Everyone on this number for a line-wide follow-up. Use Only matching contacts when only a label or attribute should get the message.

WARNING

If the contact writes again before the first send, the wait resets. After AvenPing has already sent at least once, a new inbound message cancels remaining repeats for that contact.

When does the follow-up actually send?

After the contact’s last inbound message, AvenPing waits the Wait this long value, then sends the template if the contact still matches the audience.

Can I use a date instead?

How do I stop the event?
